2. PURPOSE:
   The RUNCIMAN Mailing List is an e-mail list for co-operative genealogical research into holders of the surname Runciman (and its variant spellings), their spouses and their children.
    
   
3. TWO VERSIONS TO CHOOSE FROM:

   RUNCIMAN-L

   is for individual messages to be delivered to your e-mail address.  As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, you will receive a copy of the message.  To subscribe send an e-mail message to:
   RUNCIMAN-L-request@rootsweb.com
   with one word in the body of the message:  subscribe
   (Please turn OFF your signature file, and do not send file attachments).

   RUNCIMAN-D

   is for a digest of several accumulated messages to be delivered to your email address.  As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, they are put into a digest to be delivered later.  The digest is generated approximately once a day and delivered to digest subscribers.  This option is probably not necessary for this list with few postings, but it could be handy for people who don't want multiple messages to accumulate in their mail box.  To subscribe send an email message to:
   RUNCIMAN-D-request@rootsweb.com
   with one word in the body of the message:  subscribe

4. E-MAIL ADDRESSES TO USE:
   There are two separate e-mail addresses to use in order to participate in this list:
   • To post messages to all subscribers on either version of the list use:
     RUNCIMAN-L@rootsweb.com
     1. Please ensure the subject adequately indicates message content;
     2. Please confine message content to the purpose of the list.  When replying to previous postings, avoid echoing entire messages back to be repeated on the list;
     3. Please ensure that messages are in plain text by turning OFF your email program's HTML encoding.  Please see RootsWeb's guidance How to Turn Off HTML or RTF in Various E-mail Software Programs.
     4. Please do not send file attachments of any kind.
   • To send commands to the computer & SmartList software that runs this list:

     3. To retrieve archived messages:
        This can be useful if you have just subscribed as it allows you to see previous postings.  If you decide you want to read the message about Runciman sailors, the latest/447 part of the line identifies the file containing the message.  Send another message to
        RUNCIMAN-L-request@rootsweb.com
        with the subject archive SEND latest/447
        and nothing in the body. You can request several messages at once, but please don't request more than ten at a time.
     Please do NOT use a signature file attached to the e-mail message when sending commands.  The software reads your message and tries to answer each command it finds.  When it runs across your signature file it gets a bit confused and will send you a message stating something like "Do not recognize command 'Jones'.  Do not recognize command 'Smith'", etc.

   Runciman isn't a very common name, and there may be long periods when this list has little traffic.  Those on the list will be interested to hear about your research, and you may discover long-lost cousins.
