Domain Names are a contentious issue and at some time you may have received a letter saying something along the lines "We can register your business name and store it on our computer for safe keeping" often followed by "and we can also rent you xyz services" It is now worth considering safeguarding your company name for future online use to ensure it is not taken by another opportunistic company or one with a similar name to yours. However these 'Name registration' companies are mostly UK businesses doing large mail shots, some even integrate and suggest an Internet name for you. Most of these companies are UK based and offer a derivative of the UK 'domain name' structure. Guernsey is not UK. The Bailiwick is British Isles and for the financial services industry there can be compliance considerations to take into account when associating your business name with the UK. Further, actually hosting your name, mail or web pages on a UK server, even if being 'held' for later use could have VAT levied on the service as it is provided in the UK. Further considerations, what taxation jurisdiction are your services domicile? There is now a 'Guernsey' domain naming structure for which we are authorised agents and we run a secondary back up facility which operates here in the island which uses the suffix '.gg' or '.co.gg'. '. co' being for company, '.gg' being the official world-wide Internet assignation for Guernsey. For international companies there is the .com suffix for your Internet addressing which, depending on the nature of your business could be more appropriate. Rule of thumb is, if you use Guernsey in your title use '.gg'. If you use 'International' use the '.com'. Examples: johnjones@yourbusiness.com for email or http://www.yourbusiness.com for web pages, replacing .com with .co.gg if so desired. E-mail is making inroads into traditional forms of communication such as letter, fax and in some cases telephone. Over the last few months there have been many articles and television programmes on the subject illustrating the threats, opportunities and cost savings to business. The Internet uses world-wide unique names such as yourcompany.co.gg or yourcompany.gg to deliver email and access Web sites. Once another party has registered an Internet name, everyone else loses the right to use it. Registering a name will protect it from use by others even if you currently do not have access to the Internet. By using a name registered to your organisation, you can create unique email and web addresses that do not belong to your Internet access provider. If you ever need to change your access provider, you will not lose your valuable email address, which could have resulted in lost orders, missed messages and significant costs in re-printing your literature. Guernsey.Net are able to register and store your chosen name for the Guernsey, UK and International naming systems. We are pleased to offer advice for free. Telephone us should you decide to make a registration and hold the name for future use.
