Amanita rubescens Pluteaceae The Blusher

Picture 1 Bruised Slug eaten

Amanita rubescens 19kb

Amanita rubescens, The Blusher. This is one of the commonest large fungi found in Guernsey. It is related to the Death Cap, and has an obvious, hanging ring, and a swollen base, but not distinct volva. The brown cap is covered in whitish spots remaining from the veil, and is said to look like the skin of a roast goose. It gets its name from the fact that it becomes red where broken, bruised of eaten by slugs. This fungus is edible when well cooked, but make sure you know it first because its relatives are deadly.
