|Auricularia auricula-judae||Auriculariaceae||Jelly Ear|
Auricularia auricula-judae, Jelly Ear. This strange fungus can uncannily resemble a jelly-like ear. The fruit bodies appear, usually in small groups, on dead or dying tree trunks, particularly of Elder. Judas Iscariot is purported to have been hanged on an Elder tree, explaining its older, now unacceptable name of Jew's Ear. This fungus may appear all year round, after some rain, and is very common. It is edible raw or cooked, but always keeps its crisp outer skin, and jelly-like texture within, however long it is cooked - not enjoyed by every-one, especially as it has little or no flavour!
