Asplenium ceterach Aspleniaceae Rustyback

Asplenium ceterach 28kb

Description - A small, dark green fern with the fronds divided like that of Polypody and with dense brown scale on the underside, hence its name. The picture shows Rustyback on the left and Polypody on the right.

Habitat - On mortared walls.

Comments - Mostly found on walls in the north of the island. This is one of the lime-loving (calcicole) ferns found on walls. The others are: Maidenhair Fern, Wall-rue and Maidenhair Spleenwort. Most of Guernsey is formed of acid, igneous or metamorphic rocks so these ferns are only found in man-made habitats.
