|Handkea excipuliformis||Lycoperdaceae||Pestle Puffball|
Handkea excipuliformis Pestle Puffball. This is a strange-looking Puffball, with an elongated stalk. Although books say it reaches 10cm, I have found it almost twice this size. It is fairly common in Guernsey, usually in association with trees, but sometimes appearing where no trees are now obvious. It is edible, as long as the flesh inside is pure white (it will yellow with age). It tastes very similar to the Giant Puffball, but the flesh is not quite as firm. Remove the outer skin, as you would for that species.
