Lunularia cruciata Lunulariaceae

With gemmae lunules Early stage of fertile thalli

Lunularia cruciata 34kb

Description - A medium sized liverwort which has a crescent-moo n shaped flap of tissue containing gemmae - asexual reproductive bodies.

Habitat - On damp portions of roadside banks and in woods

Comments - The commonest thalloid liverwort in Guernsey. It is almost everwhere at the base of banks. It reproduces mostly by the gemmae being washed away by rain. However, some thalli in Guernsey, unusually for this species become fertile and reproduce sexually. These produce mushroom shaped bodies with stellate heads on which the sporophtes are borne.
