Lycoperdon pyriforme Lycoperdaceae Stump Puffball

Lycoperdon pyriforme 43kb

Lycoperdon pyriforme, Stump Puffball. This is the only British species of puffball to grow on wood. It is quite common in Guernsey, usually on old stumps; sometimes is appears to be growing in grassland, but an old root or buried log will be found beneath it. It is always in clusters or groups. The colour of the outer skin is yellowish, turning brown with age, and it is more or less smooth. Young specimens can be eaten. Size ranges from 1-3cm in diameter but I have occasionally seen much larger specimens with elongated stalks, about 8cm high.
