Pellia endiviifolia 89kb

Description - A typical thalloid liverwort, the genus used to be studied in the A Level syllabus. In autumn it produces thin branching outgrowths from the edge of the green thallus, making a beautifully intricate green mat.

Habitat - Grows on stream sides and similarily wet places

Comments - This liverwort has only been recorded in the south of the island. It is associated with calcareous habitats and in the south the loess is thickest. Loess is often calcareous soil blown up from the bed of the English Channel in the last ice age. It produces an unusally rich soil on the acid, metamorphic rocks making up the majority of the island.
