Phaeoceros laevis Anthocerotaceae

Phaeoceros laevis 85kb

Description - A dark green hornwort with cylindrical sporophytes.

Habitat - On damp banks

Comments - Phaeoceros is a hornwort, probably not closely related to the other liverworts. The sporophyte is cylindrical and lengthens from the base, the end splitting to release the spores. It has stomata and may be close to the ancestor of vascular plants. The thallus has only one large chloroplast per cell and contains colonies of blue-green algae giving it a characteristic colour.
