Russula queletii Russulaceae Fruity Brittlegill

Russula queletii 37kb

Russula queletii, Fruity Brittlegill. This is a striking fungus, with dark purple cap, and pink stipe. The flesh inside is pure white, and gills are cream coloured. If you taste a small piece of flesh from the top of the stipe it is extremely hot and bitter. Thus this species is inedible, though not poisonous. It is found beneath Pine trees, and grows to about 12cm in height, cap diameter 5-8cm.
