Scapania compacta Scapaniaceae

Scapania compacta 91kb

Description - A small, light brown or olive green liverwort, when wet it is bright green. It has alternate leaves. These are folded almost in half. When dry they curl down around the stem.

Habitat - It is found commonly round the coast in dry places with gravelly soil. Often it carpets areas a few metres across, particularly in areas with low vegetation.

Comments - Because of its small size it is seldom noticed, but a few minutes search with a hand lens will often reveal the odd plant, the apparent brown colour of the soil on the cliffs is sometimes caused by large patches of it.

The plant in the centre of the photograph has a sporophyte, the purple sphere.

The mosses in the photograph are young plants of Polytrichum juniperinum.
