Scutellinia scutellata, Common Eyelash Pyronemataceae Common Eyelash

Picture 1 Close Up

Scutellinia scutellata 23kb

Scutellinia scutellata Common Eyelash. You can see why this fungus is so named - look at the long hairs all around the edges of the cups. This is another miniature, and will need some magnification so that you can appreciate it. The cup-shaped fruit body is bright orange on the inside, and pale brown outside, with short darker brown hairs, with these long hairs on the edges. When young, these are closed over the cup-surface, but they open as the fruit body flattens into a disc to expose the surface for spore release. It is found on rotting tree trunks, and I have only seen it once in Guernsey, however, this may be on account of its small size (0-5-1cm).
