Solanum chenopodioides Solanaceae Tall Nightshade

Picture 1 Flower Fruit

Solanum chenopodioides 16kb

Description - At first glance, this is very similar to Black Nightshade, Solanum nigrum, but you may notice that the "jizz" is somehow wrong. The plant is usually taller, more upright, and the white flowers have a starry appearance. It is slightly downy, unlike Black Nightshade.

Habitat - Usually found on waste land, but appears to be fairly tolerant and may turn up in most situations.

Comments - This was first recorded in St Sampsons in 1958, at which time it was unknown elsewhere in the British Isles, but it is now found occasionally in the London area. It has spread south (in Guernsey) ever since, but is still most frequent in the north. It is originally from South America.
