Tulostoma brumale, Winter Stalkball.
We are now going to get on a boat and take the short trip to Herm Island, where this unusual small fungus can be seen in some numbers most years on the Common in the north. There are old records from Guernsey, but the type of habitat it enjoys is now rare (alkaline, short, undisturbed turf) Port Soif, and west end of L'Ancresse might be suitable. It is rare on the mainland. The globular top, with its small pore measures no more than 1 cm in diameter, and the stalk is perhaps 2cm, part of which will be buried in the sand.
