The year 2005 marks the 200th anniversary of Nelson's great victory at Trafalgar and his death in action. This site is designed to be used by  everyone who is interested in the seas and coasts around Guernsey. There is something for everyone; links to the main SeaBritain 2005 sites, activities for children and information about wrecks, lighthouses and castles and of course we mustn't forget our own Admiral  Lord de Saumarez who sailed with Nelson.

  The Memorial Mast
Last weekend, Sunday April 24th, amidst the rain and drizzle, saw the raising of a 32 metre replica of the mizzenmast of HMS Orion, which was commanded between 1775 and 1799 by Guernseyman Admiral James de Saumarez. The mast is situated on the roundabout at the entrance to St. Peter Port harbour. A fitting place for this splendid structure, as possibly the last wooden ship to be built in Guernsey was launched from a slipway very near to where the mast has been located.
It is based on the design of the 74-gun HMS Bellona, but the mast this time is made of steel. Eight anchor-rigging points had already been installed on the roundabout and the central mast-step set in concrete.

Interestingly, the four rigging wires are aligned to the four compass points.

The mast is set to fly the Royal Standard when Her Majesty The Queen visits the island on 9th May, to mark the 60th anniversary of Guernsey’s liberation from German Occupation at the end of WWII.
