He was named "The Father of the Railways".Most of the railways in his time were in the North East of England and carried coal. George changed all that - he wanted "inter-city" trains which carried goods and people and travelled at 30 miles an hour pulled by steam locomotives.

He couldn't read or write until he was 18! He is also pictured on an English £5 note, which is great.


He would most likely have been a Newcastle United fan - if the team had been around when he lived! Imagine that.
Another interesting fact is that he tried to grow a straight cucumber, yes honestly.
