GERMAN

What is the course about?
The course builds on the language skills acquired at GCSE and develops these to an advanced level. Students discuss and understand current issues such as the Media, Advertising, Transport, Sport and Pastimes and how they affect the German-speaking world within Europe and beyond. There is also an element of Business German which prepares students to use German in the world of work.

Which skills and/experience would be useful or essential?
Students should normally have achieved a Grade B or higher at GCSE and be prepared to work independently and in small groups. German combines well with a number of other subject areas including other foreign languages, English, science, business, psychology, history, geography or media and film studies.

How will I learn and be assessed?
The examination will assess the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grammar is important, but so is the ability to communicate your ideas in a clear manner. There is a prepared talk for AS Level Speaking and students choose a coursework task for A2.

What opportunities are available to me?
German is the most widely spoken language within the European Union and is one of its major working languages. The most obvious opportunities for specialist careers are in interpreting and translation, but other areas where a knowledge of German is an advantage include teaching, travel and tourism, I.T., finance and banking, engineering, scientific research, advertising, the media or any business which has links with Europe. Many companies and organisations need someone with a knowledge of German which they can use as the need arises, even if it is not required as a main part of their day to day job.
