What is the course about?
The course takes many of the skills acquired during GCSE to a higher level. To do well you need to be enthusiastic about reading and studying both literary and non-literary texts. An interest in language itself is an advantage. One interesting aspect of the course is the study of the dynamics of speech both in texts and ordinary conversation. Although you will need to learn some technical language terms there are many entertaining ways to fulfil this requirement. Many of the set texts are very up to date and deal with universal issues of interest to young people. There is no coursework on this course.

Which skills and/experience would be useful or essential?
We recommend that you have achieved at least C grades in English Literature and English Language. Good essay writing skills are useful as is an ability to contribute to lively class discussions. You should enjoy using and manipulating language and be organised and committed to your chosen subjects.

How will I learn and be assessed?
Hopefully a major factor in your learning will be a genuine enjoyment of the subject and thorough textual study. We use videos and DVDs where appropriate and more work is being facilitated through the new interactive whiteboards. Note-taking and annotation are features as is collage work and other useful methods such as brainstorming, mind mapping etc. The library is one of our essential resources and we like students to be able to research independently using ICT where appropriate. Assessment is usually through essays and written responses.

What opportunities are available to me?
You will be part of a valued and committed group of students and will enjoy some dedicated Sixth Form teaching space in the upper part of the main school. You will be able to move towards independent learning and be guided by well informed teachers. We encourage students to enter competitions and report for The Word through the local newspaper. You may experience poetry troubadour style in our Lecture Theatre. You will be encouraged to watch live theatre where possible. Sometimes there are radio projects to participate in through BBC Radio Guernsey. Should you wish to take responsibility we encourage prefects to involve themselves in supporting the learning of younger students through the Homework Room in the department and also help with displays of work.
