What is the course about?
Environmental news stories are popular with the media. TV news, documentaries
and newspapers are full of environmental issues. Why? Because the environment
is fascinating and important. We all interact with our surroundings. Why not
find out more about how all aspects of the environment and all living things
are linked. Investigate important issues such as climate change and the extinction
of species.
Which skills and experience would be useful or essential?
There are no special requirements in terms of qualifications, although a background
in geography, biology and other sciences would be useful. An interest in the
environment will help but you do not have to be ‘Green’. It is more
important to appreciate that there are often a range of different viewpoints.
How will I learn and be assessed?
Expect to be involved in practical work, data collection in the field, visits,
and land group investigations. In the classroom there will be discussions, debates
and enquiries involving internet research. Reports essays, and investigations
will be assessed regularly and you are likely to sit your first AS Environmental
Science unit in the January of year 12.
What opportunities are available to me?
The course is intended to be interesting and enjoyable. It will help you to
appreciate and understand your surroundings, your role and you’re your
responsibilities. It is a useful qualification for a wide range of Further Education
Courses. In fact many universities offer Environmental Science. The subject
also provides the knowledge and skills for a variety of career opportunities.
