INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

What is the course about?
The emphasis of this course is placed on developing an appreciation of the importance of information to individuals and organisations and an understanding of how information handling can be enhanced through technology. It uses a practical approach to problem solving that relies on the effective use of information and communication technology systems. The first year of the course explores the nature of information, the use of information systems, the management of information and its uses in the policy and strategy of organisations. The second year of the course examines the impact of ICT on industry and commerce. The course will develop the student’s problem solving skills, team work and research skills, along with their competence with ICT applications.

Which skills and experience would be useful or essential?
Students must enjoy using a computer and have a basic understanding of the main ICT applications. Much of the course is problem solving and includes group research and delivery. It is therefore important that students enjoy working as part of a team as well as individual, independent study.

How will I learn and be assessed?
The course is primarily theory based, and 60% of the course is assessed by written examination. A major assignment is also submitted as coursework each year. Students will be required to complete projects that will involve developing computer systems using generic applications packages. Students are required to work independently on assignments and on developing practical skills outside of lessons.
Lessons involve both taught theory and practical activity, and a wide variety of teaching methods are used; independent research, group work, together with discussion and teacher-led sessions. Wherever possible, theoretical ICT concepts are reinforced by practical tasks.

What opportunities will be available to me?
You will be given the opportunity to develop advanced IT skills and to apply them to the development of a solution to real problems. You will also develop skills in collecting facts, analysing them and selecting the appropriate software package to develop the solution to the problem. Skills learnt during this course will be of benefit to students in both their higher education courses and future employment.
