PHYSICS
What is the course about?
The course builds on knowledge and skills developed at GCSE. To do well, you
need to be the sort of person who enjoys using mathematics to answer questions
about how the world works. You will study basic topics such as mechanics,
electricity and thermal physics and then gain further insights into topics
such as astrophysics, particle physics etc. At A2 the studies include quantum
physics and the physics of fields.
Which skills and/experience would be useful or essential?
We recommend that you have achieved at least a grade BB in GCSE Double Award
Science or B in Physics and also a grade B in Mathematics as you will need
to be comfortable in algebra. We would also recommend that Physics at AS or
A2 is studied along side Mathematics as the subjects complement each other
and you can take your studies of Physics no further unless you also study
Maths.. You should enjoy problem solving and be able to work independently
and in small groups.
How will I learn and be assessed?
You will be actively involved in individual and group work and the approach
will encourage questioning and problem solving. Assessment will be through
both written and practical tests.
What opportunities are available to me?
As well as Science and Engineering, the problem solving skills of physicists
are highly sought. You could end up in areas as diverse as Health or Finance.
