‘AS’ Level

Course outline:
1. Introduction to concepts and theories associated with sociological understanding of human behaviour. Begins to explore the relationship between the individual and social structures and how and to what extent individuals shape/are shaped by social structures.
2. Family – a study of the family – the way it has changed and the different types of families. The divisions of power within the family.
3. Basic concepts in research design, ways of collecting data. Interpreting and evaluating sociological data.

Teaching and Learning Styles: Use of text books, note taking, essay writing, data response, interpreting information, discussions, question and answer sessions.

Units: 1 The Individual and Society
2 Culture and Socialisation
3 Sociological Research Skills/Research Report.

Assessment: 3 written examinations made up of 2 examinations of 1 hour and 1 examination of 1 hour 30 minutes OR 1 examination of 1 hour and 1 examination of 1 hour 15 minutes and a piece of coursework.

‘A2’ Level

Course outline:
1. A study of either crime and deviance or education (yet to be decided)
2. Development of research skills acquired at AS level
3. Exploration of the level and pattern of inequality in contemporary Britain.

Teaching and Learning Styles: Use of text books, note taking, essay writing, data response, interpreting information, discussions, question and answer sessions.

Units: 1 Power and control
2 Social inequality and difference
3 Applied sociological research skills/personal study.


Assessment: 1 examination of 1 hour, 1 examination of 1hour 30 minutes and either
a further examination of 1hour 30 minutes or coursework.
