In the Church of St George in the Hampshire Village of Enham Alamein is a unique memorial linking the Middle East, North Africa and Italy with 205 Group. Made by Squadron Leader Richard Smith, a navigator who served with 37 Squadron in North Africa, the memorial is a mahogany stand holding the visitors book. Carved on the sides are the badges of the six Vickers Wellington squadrons in the Group 37, 40, 70, 104, 108. and 148. Overshadowed by the achievements of Bomber Command in Europe, 205 Group, which was formed at Shallofa, Egypt, on October 23, 1941, played a vital role in clearing Axis forces from the continent of Africa, in the invasions of Sicily Italy and southern France, assisting partisans in the Balkans, and mining the Danube. |
