The Guernsey Council of Churches

Launch of Christian Reconciliation '97

The Anglican Dean of Guernsey Comments:-

When asked for his views on the Guernsey initiative, the Dean said:-

"The theme of the 2nd European Ecumenical Assembly to be held at Graz, Austria next July is 'Reconciliation', picking up St. Paul's message to the Corinthian Church. Europe is a mass of contradictions at the moment. The euphoria engendered by the fall of the Berlin wall has gone, and whilst the European Union is moving to integration, old enmities are resurfacing and the vision is looking somewhat hollow.

Guernsey is a small Island of some 60,000 people and along with the other Channel Islands was the only part of the British Islands to be occupied in the 1939-45 war. The ocupation seperated families; and led to some internment in Germany. Many have become reconciled over the years and have healed their bad memories. Others still find it difficult to forgive or to forget.

In response to the call of the Ecumenical Assembly to reconciliation, the Guernsey Council of Churches is reaching out it's hand in friendship to German Christians and inviting them to join with us in praying and talking together next September, that we may truly heal the past and build a better future under Christ."
