White Peaks Run 1997
This year's run was held on Sunday 8 June at the mining museum car park, Matlock, Bath. I had flown to East Midlands Airport where Graham Tew picked me up for the ten minute drive to his place, where I was to find the recently restored RD350B waiting for me. The rest of the afternoon was spent cleaning and road testing the bikes. Graham has spent the last two years restoring these two fine Yams, the first was seen at last year's show at Stafford while the last eight months was dedicated to finishing the other one for me to collect for the run. Later on that afternoon Dave 'the graze' Mathieson turned up on some funny looking bike with six cylinders made by a company who's name is a swear word within these pages. The next day we awoke to a bright morning where soon more members were turning up at Graham's. John Starkey and Robin Howson turned up in a hired van all the way from Kent. After a quick cuppa we were on the way to Matlock and the starting place for the run. Turning into the car-park we could see that many had already arrived, with their bikes lined up and looking impressive. Bikes in the line-up included an XS750 triple, RD250c, RD400E, XV920 (American import), RD200C, RD200A, CS2 180 and the two RD350Bs and a couple of other makes which members had brought along. All in all we had a fine turn out of some thirteen bikes. After a chin wag and a look at each others bike it was on the road to the Peak District.
The route was the same as last year's run so the first stop was at Hartington where we stopped for a break in the picturesque village. It was then onto the steep winding dales incorporating Manifold Valley and other superb testing hills before the stop for dinner and beer. The time was taken to present trophies and awards which were Furthest Travelled - Nigel Willoughby (CS2 180) - 350 miles round trip and Best Turned Out - Graham Tew (RD350B). From the pub the run took in more scenic areas of the White Peaks on the way back to Matlock at which point the heavens opened for a leak. The sun came out in good time for the end as people departed for the trip home. Nigel Willoughby and I rode back to Cheltenham (where he kindly put me up for the night) before continuing on the 350 to Poole for the ferry home.
Special thanks to Graham Tew for once again organising this excellent run
