Bonamy and Margaret Martel are celebrating
a fantastic achievement for Guernsey Island Cattle. Their Les
Jaonnets herd is the top production and genetic merit Guernsey
herd in the British Isles. Now their Bull, Les Jaonnets Caras
Conqueror is the first European Guernsey bull to have semen released
for sale in the United States of America. The last exports to
the United States were in the early 1950s when just a few live
animals were flown out from the Island to US breeders.
In 1992 the World Guernsey Cattle Federation
instituted the Guernsey Global Breeding Programme (GGBP). A very
successful pilot scheme linking Island and UK Guernsey herds
in a co-operative young bull programme has been in operation
since 2002. 'We always wanted to extend this to the USA', said
Bill Luff, Vice President of the Royal Guernsey Agricultural
& Horticultural Society and WGCF Secretary. 'We have known
for a number of years that our local bulls could easily compete
with American Guernseys and we have been promoting them to US
breeders', he said, 'Now the breakthrough has occurred'.
Frank and Patti Faria of Golden State Breeders
expressed interest in importing Conqueror semen about a year
ago. In the meantime the bull has been in use in Island herds
and has won the coveted HM Queen's Cup for Bulls. One of his
daughters was Champion Heifer at the 2010 Guernsey Royal Show.
Conqueror's dam, Keegan's Cara of Les Jaonnets, and great grand
dam, Talisman's Kerry of Les Jaonnets were winners of HM Queen's
Cup for cows. Cara is the leading production animal for the Island
and UK. Conqueror's sire is leading English Guernsey bull Tiresford
Pedro whose dam, Tiresford Carmen 2, a former Supreme Champion
of the European Dairy Farming Event, is the grand daughter of
Island cow Maple Leaf Carmen.
Last year Conqueror was sold to DW, RJ
& JR Warren of Tredinney Farm, St Bruyan, Penzance, Cornwall.
He travelled from Guernsey to UK Sires Services Ltd A.I. Stud
at Dartington, Devon, where he was custom collected for the USA
on a specially licensed unit. The bull will also be marketed
in the UK by Genus ABS.
